Technical Committees
Each division of the Glass Association of North America (GANA) is encouraged to address technical issue relating to their specific areas of expertise through the formation of Technical Committees and related Subcommittees and Task Groups. Division member companies are encouraged to designate a technical representative for participation in the Technical Committee. Building Envelope Contractors Division
BEC Division Technical Committee - Chairman: Henry Taylor, Kawneer Company, Inc.
The Technical Committee for the Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Division has identified the following objectives for future committee efforts:

  • Development of an Industry Standard Contract Qualification Document

  • Development of BEC Division Project Manager Educational Program

  • Update of the GANA and Sealant Manual

  • Update of the GANA - Fabrication, Erection and Glazing Hours Manual

The BEC Division Technical Committee meets at the annual BEC Conference (held each February in Las Vegas) and for work sessions as directed by subcommittee chairmen.

Project Managers Reference Manual Task Group - Chairman: Phil DeSautell, Walters & Wolf Glass Co.
The Project Managers Reference Manual Task Group focuses on the creation of an industry manual on proper project management. This manual is forecast to be finished in Spring 2005.

Shop Drawing Task Group - Chairman: Kirk Osgood, CDC, Inc.
The Shop Drawing Task Group is working to create a Glass Informational Bulletins focused on proper documentation and requirements used in contract glazing.

Contract Qualifications Task Group - Chairman: William Keen, TEPCO Contract Glazing, Inc.
The Contract Qualifications Task Group is working to create a focusing on standardizing industry contract documents.

Insulating Division
Insulating Division Technical Committee - Chairman: Tim Moore, P.D.C. Glass & Metal Services/United Glass Corp.
The Technical Committee for the Insulating Division of GANA serves at the direction of the Insulating Division and is responsible for the identification, development, and implementation of technical projects relating to commercial insulating glass units. The Committee has identified the following projects for subcommittee efforts:

  • Affects of hurricanes on insulating glass

  • Document on describing insulating glass constructions

  • Document on sightlines for commercial insulating glass units

  • Document on terminology in the commercial insulating glass industry

  • Insulating glass inspection criteria

Educational Subcommittee - Chairman: Bill O'Brien - Dow Corning Corporation
The Educational Subcommittee provides program planning for the insulating sessions during the annual GANA Glass Fabrication Educational Seminars. The educational seminars provide detailed training for production management, supervision and line operation personnel for glass fabricators across North America.

Laminating Division
Laminating Division Technical Committee - Chairman: Dan Laporte - Solutia Inc.

The Technical Committee for the Laminating Division of GANA has a long history dating back to the original Laminated Safety Glass Association (LSGA). The committee has provided numerous technical resources to the fenestration industry including the recently published GANA Laminated Glazing Reference Manual, a 56-page reference manual detailing technical applications for laminated glazing constructions and an extensive security glazing test program. The committee also serves as a primary source for the development and maintenance of industry standards and specifications related to laminated glazing material fabrication, testing and application.

Educational Subcommittee - Chairman: Dan Laporte - Solutia Inc.
The Educational Subcommittee provides program planning for the laminating sessions during the annual GANA Glass Fabrication Educational Seminars. The educational seminars provide detailed training for production management, supervision and line operation personnel for glass fabricators across North America.

Laminated Glazing Reference Manual Task Group - Chairman: Julie Schimmelpenningh, Solutia Inc.
The Laminated Glazing Reference Manual Task Group continuously works compile and develop materials to update the Laminated Glazing Reference Manual for release every two years.

Product Labeling Task Group - Chairman: Peter Anderson, Apogee (Viracon)
The Product Labeling Task Group is developing a Glass Informational Bulleting addressing labeling requirements for architectural glass products.

Ball Drop Test Method Task Group - Chairman: Julie Schimmelpenningh, Solutia Inc.
The Ball Drop Test Method Task Group is developing an in-plant test method to evaluate the impact performance of laminated flat glass.

Glass Flooring Task Group - Chairman: John Bush, Oldcastle Glass
The Glass Flooring Task Group will be developing a Glass Informational Bulletin on glass flooring.

The Laminating Division Technical Committee and related subcommittees and task groups meet at the annual Glass Week and GANA Fall Conference. The committee chairman may convene additional work sessions.

Mirror Division
Mirror Division Technical Committee
The Mirror Division Technical Committee is working to address issues relating to mirror fabrication, handling and use. The Mirror Division played a major role in the development of the ASTM International (ASTM) document C 1503 Standard Specification for Silvered Flat Glass Mirror and numerous other publications relating to mirror design and application.

Tempering Division
Standards & Engineering Committee - Chairman: Chuck Wencl, Apogee (Viracon)
The Tempering Division's Standards & Engineering Committee dates back to the original Glass Tempering Association (GTA). The committee has a long history of providing technical reference materials relating to the design, fabrication and use of heat-treated glass products for architectural construction, decorative, appliance, furniture and transportation applications.  The committee also serves as a primary source for the development and maintenance of industry standards and specifications related to heat-treated glass fabrication, testing and application.

Construction Subcommittee - Chairman: Mike Rupert, PPG Industries, Inc.
The Construction Subcommittee has developed Glass Information Bulletins addressing the characteristics of heat-treated glass surfaces, proper procedures for cleaning architectural glass and construction site protection. A task group within the subcommittee is representing GANA in the development of educational materials standards relating to window cleaning.

Educational Subcommittee - Chairman: Cliff Monroe, Arch Aluminum and Glass Company
The Educational Subcommittee provides program planning for the tempering sessions during the annual GANA Glass Fabrication Educational Seminars. The educational seminars provide detailed training for production management, supervision and line operation personnel for glass fabricators across North America.

Optical Distortion Subcommittee - Chairman: Joel Feingold, Strainoptics, Inc.
The scope of the optical distortion subcommittee is to develop test methods to measure observed deviation from flatness of heat-treated architectural glass products.

Engineering Standards Manual Task Group - Chairman: Needed
The Engineering Standards Manual Task Group is working to compile and develop materials to update the Manual.

Hole and Notch Task Group – Chairman: Bill Coddington, W.S. Coddington Consulting, LLC
The Hole and Notch Task Group is reviewing industry standards for holes and notches in fabricated flat glass products.

The Tempering Division Standards and Engineering Committee and related subcommittees and task groups meet at the annual Glass Week and GANA Fall Conference. The subcommittee and task group chairmen often convene individual work sessions.
